Amaro Camatti is born
Amaro Camatti was created in the 1920s in Recco, Liguria, by Livorno-born chemist Umberto Briganti and his brother Cesare. Umberto named the liqueur after his wife. Those who worked in the first factory still remember the intense aromas of herbs from an old herbalist's shop and caramelized sugar. These ingredients, combined with the proximity to the sea, make Amaro Camatti still beloved and special today.
Princely Bitter
The company producing Amaro Camatti, led by Umberto Briganti, was awarded an important honor. It was recognized as "Supplier to the Household of His Royal Highness the Prince of Piedmont," with the right to display the Princely Coat of Arms on the factory's sign.
Stronger than War
During World War II, the Recco factory was requisitioned by the Monterosa Alpine troops, who moved into the second floor, while the Wehrmacht soldiers stationed in Recco moved below. Although even the sugar was confiscated, production resumed after the war.
Briganti Dynasty
Even after the war, Umberto Briganti continued his business very well, and Amaro Camatti became increasingly popular. Briganti passed away in 1964 and left his legacy to his son Cesare, who continued production alongside his son until 1989, when the brand and recipe were passed on to Sangallo.
The Sangallo production
Around the same time Briganti began producing his Amaro Camatti, Giovanni Bergamino began working at the Ballerini factory in Lavagna, in the province of Genoa, where artisanal liqueurs were produced. It was he who acquired the Amaro Camatti brand in 1989.
A successful bitter
Amaro Camatti continues to be produced with the same passion and care as ever. Stefano Bergamino and Marco De Marchi oversee its production, preserving the secret recipe. Over the years, Amaro Camatti has been exported to Europe, America, and even Oceania.
